The city of 2 million people was recently identified as having the world's highest quality of life for the tenth year in a row. That opinion comes from Mercer, a consulting agency that does a yearly Quality of Living Ranking. Measuring quality of life is not a simple job. In a statement, Mercer said the agency looks at many factors. For example, researchers measure how easily people can use public transport, such as buses and trains. They ask whether drivers can move well on the roads. They ask if houses and apartments are available at a good price, and whether children can go to international schools. They think about whether people in the city can enjoy music, theater, restaurants and sports. And, they look for a healthy political and social climate. In total, the agency considered 39 factors in 10 areas to name Vienna the winner. Vienna has also been ranked number one on other quality of life measurements, such as the Economist's Global Liveability Index. Also ran Other top cities on Mercer's list included Zurich, Auckland, Munich and Vancouver. The 10 cities at the bottom of Mercer’s list did not change from the previous year. Baghdad ranked last, followed by Bangui in the Central African Republic and Sanaa, Yemen's capital. American cities did not do very well on quality of life rankings this year. "All US cities covered in the analysis fell in the rankings this year, with Washington DC (53) the biggest faller," noted Mercer's statement. 或是 "are you looking for something?" 或是 "i'm just looking." 但如果你是真的要找某一件特定的商品,比方说你想找一件高领的毛衣,你就可以说?quot;i'm looking for a turtle neck sweater. could you help me?" 或是 "do you have any turtle neck sweater?" 2. may i try this on? 要是不知道试衣间在哪里的话,则可以问店员?quot;where is the fitting room?" 3. i like this tank top. it goes with my baggy jeans. 4. could you help me pick up a dressy dress? 例如?quot;her dressy dress really caught my eyes." 例如,"lulu is dressed up today. she looks so nice." 小笨霖建议各位当你不管看到任何女?dress up 出现时不妨赞美她 "i like your dress!" 或是 "you look so nice today!" 5. i don't like too much cleavage. 例如朋友试图游说你买一件低胸礼服,你就可以回答?quot;i don't like too much cleavage." 或是 "my mom will kill me if she sees too much cleavage." 想当然尔,男生常常会拿女生的 cleavage 来开玩笑,例如电视上看到的,"she's got so much cleavage that she can hide a fully-equipped platoon in between there." 6. i just want to buy some off-the-rack clothes. 例如我朋友问我?quot;your jacket looks very nice. where did you get it?" 例如,"i need to get a custom-made tuxedo for my wedding." 7. this shirt is very stylish and not very expensive. ; "it's very stylish." 或是 "it's very becoming to (on) you." 8. i don't think this one will fit me. 一句是 "it's not my size." 另一句则?"it won't fit me." 例如在逛街时,朋友说,"hey, check this out! i think you should buy it." 你说?quot;it looks good but it's not my size. maybe it will fit you." "i have a pair of pants that need alteration. can you tell me where i should go?" 9. your clothes don't match. "clothes don't match." 当然我们也可以更明确地指出是哪两件衣服不搭配,例如你朋友想买一件红色的上衣,你可以警告她,"this red top and your pants don't match." 或是 "this red top doesn't match your pants." 10. let me ring that up for you! 买方结帐最标准的讲法是 check out,例如你衣服都买好了,就可以拿到收银?(cash register),跟店员说,"i want to check out." 这时候你就可以用这里学到?ring it up 这个片语来回答她?quot;ok. go ahead and ring it up for me." 或是有时候店员看到你拿著衣服走过来,她也会主动地跟你说,"let me ring that up for you." 我们常常讲要「入境随俗?in rome, do as the romans do),但要真的作到入境随俗简单吗? 但我的朋友当中居然就有人会跑去跟老美说,"it's not very polite to do this."

1. that woman is robbing the cradle! 后来我好不容易才发现了这句瑰宝 "she is robbing the cradle." 不过通常老美都是老男人在吃嫩草,所以一般听到的都是?quot;he is robbing the cradle." 所以当你跟老美?"she is robbing the cradle." 2. my best friend is going to die a virgin. 注意:die 后面直接?a virgin 就行了,不要画蛇添足写成 die as a virgin? 例如你今年都三十好几了,却连个男朋友都没交过,这时你的损友可能就会笑你?quot;i think you are going to die a virgin!" 所以男生没事也可以嚷嚷?quot;i don't want to die a virgin!" 3. my girlfriend is so neurotic. 所以我分别?on edge ?neurotic 造个句子来加深大家的印象?quot;we don't get along too well 'coz she is always on edge." "he wants to porce her because she is so neurotic." 4. you are a disgrace of a woman. 就是 jerry springer show。 例?"is it a disgrace for a woman having too many boyfriends?" 就是 "you are a disgrace of a woman." 我还听老美骂过更夸张的,他说,"you are a disgrace of a human being." 5. are you trying to get me in my bitch mode or what? 但一般我听人家在骂人都是?quot;you are a bitch." "she is a bitch.",好?bitch 就只能这么用。 当她生气时,就会从正常模式切换成坏女人模式,所以例句中说,"are you trying to get me in my bitch mode or what?" 又比方说吧,有一个女生平常看起来乖乖的,从来也没发过太大的脾气,但有一天突然吃错药火山爆发了,像这种情况你就可以说?quot;i've never seen her in the bitch mode. today is my first time." 6. she is a whore. 所以女人有时会自豪地说?quot;i'm a bitch." 但绝不会说,"i'm a whore." 所以下次当你听到黑人说?quot;she is a ho." 他不是说 "she is a hole." 而是 "she is a whore." 7. i can't stand her because she is a high-maintenance woman. 所以你可以说,"she is high-maintenance." 或是 "my mom is a high-maintenance woman." 很简单,就说 "she is a princess." 不过如果老美跟你说,"she is a princess." 8. she's got him wrapped around her fingers. 或是 "he is whipped." 例?"she wears the pants in their relationship." 或是 "she's got him wrapped around her fingers." 我的老美朋友告诉我还有一句,"she's got him eating out of her hands." 片中那个装疯卖傻的年轻人提到另外那个扫地的老头时就说,"i've got him wrapped around my fingers." 9. she is a shrew. 10. she's a ballbreaker. 你除了可以说, "she's a ballbreaker." 之外,也可以?"she really busts my balls." 如果你觉得?ballbreaker ?balls 不雅的话,还有一种用法, "she's always on my case."

1.your shoelace is untied. 只讲 "your shoe is untied." 所以那个年纪的小孩子常会很自豪地讲?quot;i know how to tie my shoelaces." 或是 "i know how to tie my shoe." 2. my legs are so sore. 没错,就?"my legs are so sore." 或是 "my legs are aching." 我还听过有人讲 "my legs are painful." 但要是你比较喜欢口语的讲法,则我建议你说,"my legs are killing me." 这是一种很通行的用法,当然 kill 的用法不限于脚,你也可以说,"my head(ache) is killing me." 记得以前听老美?"my legs are sore." 所以我就常跟人家讲?quot;my legs are sour." 3. your feet stink. i guess you have athlete's foot. 例如你?"your feet stink." 或是 "your feet smell." "it tastes like feet." 4. stomp your feet. 5. she got cold feet before her wedding. "i don't want to marry chandler. i've got cold feet." rachel "look monica, getting cold feet is very common...." 6. you have a lead foot. 我们这车的一个老美就跟那台车的司机说,"you really got a lead foot." 例如一行人去爬山结果他老兄一个人远远地落在最后面,这时我们可以催促他?quot;you got a lead foot or what?" 选录一篇网络上看到的文?signs of having a lead foot (开快车的一些徵? 1. "your friends car pool with you not to save gas but to save time." 2. "when you stop, you leave a mile long skid mark." "you always leave at the last minute, but you're never late." 4. your speed gauge (speedometer) is stuck in the max speed position." 7. you are pulling my leg. 扯后腿的正确讲法应该? hold someone back 或是 be a drag/hindrance on someone. pull my leg 正确的意思是当你觉得别人是在开玩笑,而你不相信他所讲的话时你说?quot;you're pulling my leg." (get out of here)。 "get outta here." 或是最简单的讲法?quot;you must be kidding." 但?"you are pulling our legs." 8. someone tripped over the extension cord. 首先如果你单说自己被绊倒了,没有特定指被什么东西绊倒了,用 be tripped up 或是 get tripped up,例?"i got tripped up that's why i got hurt." 再来如果是「被」什么东西绊倒了,直接在 be/get tripped up 后面接一?by something。例如我被延长线绊倒了,就是,"i got tripped up by the extension cord." 这里是用被动式 "i got tripped up by..." 例如同样是被延长线绊倒的,但你想?trip over,原句就会变?"i tripped over the extension cord." 或是 "i tripped over myself." 9. he has one foot in the grave. 例如,"the old man is so sick. he has one foot in the grave." 另外 one foot in the grave 有时候也指「处于极度危险之中」,?one foot in the grave 作此解释时,它就等于另一个常用到的片?someone is skating on thin ice 或是简?someone is on thin ice。例如有人去跟地下钱庄借钱,你就可以说?quot;now you have one foot in the grave." 或是?"you are skating on thin ice." 如果比这个情况还要更严重,老美还会说,"you have one foot in the grave and one on banana peel." 想再恐吓他一下还可以再加上,"and that banana peel is slipping." 10. triple step, triple step, rock, step. 所以我就抓一个正在拔萝卜的老太太问她说?quot;do you live here?" 她回答我说,"yes, i live here with my husband and three children." 我又接著问了,"did you ever go out and have some fast food like macdonald?" 她一脸很疑惑的样子,?"i don't understand what you mean?" 再问一次,"how about movies?" 结果她又好气又好笑地说了,"it is 1627 now." (现在?1627 ?, 她一边说还一边拿了一顶草帽给我,"i think you need this because your brain is melting."

1. you are so sweet. "that's so sweet." "that's so romantic." "that's so sweet." 所以下次如果各位女性朋友遇到哪位男士让你心里觉得很温馨的话, 就不妨称赞他, "you are so sweet." 2. he is so cute. "he is gorgeous." "he is so handsome." "he is way too cute to be straight." 所以女生不妨把 "he is way too cute to be straight." 不但会说, "he is so cute." "he has a cute butt." 3. he is adorable. "he is so adorable." :( 附带一提就?adorable 其实最常用在形容小孩子, "your baby is so adorable." (你的婴儿真可?, 或是形容宠物, "i like your kitten because it is so adorable." 例如, "i tried to act adorable to get all i wanted." 或是, "he knows how to act cute to get her heart." (他知道如何去装可爱来博取她的欢心.) 4. a mamma's boy is not my type. "don't tell me you are a mamma's boy." "you are a good boy." 5. technically speaking, he is not my prince charming. 后来我讲到了, "mirror, mirror, who is the most beautiful woman in the world." "mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" "my mom told me that prince charming would just come and sweep me off my feet." "you would wake up one day finding your snow white is right next to you." 6. i had a feeling that he is the mr. right i was looking for. 例如老美常说, "he is perfect for you." "he is your mr. perfect." 7. you got to admit you are whipped. 但当人家?"i am whipped." "he is whipped." "if one calls his girlfriend right after getting out of a movie to tell her how it is, then he is whipped." "if one brags about what his girlfriend does to him all the time then he is whipped and too embarrassed to admit it." 3. "if one swears to a girl then he wants to be whipped." "if one never hangs out with his friends because he is too tied up with his girlfriend then he is whipped." 5. "if one has a girlfriend smarter than him such that he can't play mind games so he is whipped." 8. he is fine. 很多人可能会误会 "he is fine." 当你说一个人, "he is fine." "he is awesome.". "i am fine." "he is fly." "he is awesome." 或是 "he is fly." 都可? 9. he is one of the kind. 他是独一无二? one of the kind 是一句成? 所以当你说, "he is one of the kind." ? "what kind of gentleman are you?" 这时你就可以?"one of the kind." 公主?shrek, "what kind of knight are you?" (你这样算是什么武?, 他就接道, "one of the kind." 为什么她只喜?one of the kind 的东? ross 的解释很有道? 他说因为 phoebe 本身是双胞胎 (twins), 所以她就不能算是独一无二?(one of the kind), 也就造成了她盲目崇拜 one of the kind 的心态了. 10. he is an alpha male.

1. i'll call the cops. 所以我们就可以称她, "she is a police officer." "i'll call 911." 或是 "i'll call firetrucks." (firetrucks 在这里是消防车的意?) 2. i was pulled over by the state patrol. , "don't move an inch." 或是 "stand still." 4. it's a double homicide. "someone got killed." 例如, "it's a homicide committed by a professional killer." 走私毒品 drug trafficking, 重伤?serious assault, 殴打 assault and battery, 纵火 arson. 5. he is a serial slasher. 例如 scream 1, 2, 3; urban legend: final cut; valentine, a nightmare on elm street, friday the thirteenth 等等都是. "he is a slasher." 例如, "she is a slasher with excellent athletic ability." 6. you don't look like a cold-blooded murderer. "fish" (?. 她就回道, "fish is cold-blooded. doesn't count." 例如, "you are the most cold-blooded man i've ever known." 7. the cops are after me. "the cops are after me." 他说, "a shark was after me." 8. if you dare to take off. i'll hunt you down. 例如, "if you dare to touch my girlfriend. i'll hunt you down." 在电?meet the parents ? "i'll hunt you down." "no matter where you are, i'll hunt you down." 或是, "a detective was sent out to hunt down the drug traffickers" (我们派出一位探长去追补毒枭) 9. they held me at gunpoint. 「拿枪指著某人」这句话英文里可以直接翻?"point a gun at someone", 但是老美比较常用的说法则?hold someone at gunpoint. 例如, "the suspect kidnapped a police officer and held him at gunpoint." 最简单的说法就是, "he robbed me at gunpoint." 就行? 10. we got to find out who the dirty cop is. 例如, "he turned out to be the dirty cop." 例如, "the movie is about dirty cops and double-crosses." 例如, "the dirty cop double-crossed his partner and put him in danger."

Google’s Lookout App Helps Blind People Experience the World Google has launched a new app designed to help blind people explore their surroundings. The free app, called Lookout, is currently available to users in the United States who own a Google Pixel device. The company says it hopes to bring Lookout to more devices and additional countries soon. The app was first announced at Google’s I/O developer conference in May 2018. Since then, the company says it has been testing and working to improve the quality of its results. The app uses technology similar to Google Lens. That product uses machine learning to recognize text and objects through a device’s camera. Users can then receive information about or take actions related to the text and recognized objects. Lookout builds on this same technology, but aims to provide assistance to people who are blind or have low vision. The app uses a device’s camera to recognize text and objects and then provide voice descriptions about what it sees. Lookout is not designed to describe everything, but instead seeks to search out things that people would most likely care about. The app can learn to judge what things are most important to a person over time. Google says the app operates best when the user wears a device around the neck or inside a pocket, with the camera lens pointed outward. Lookout has three main settings for people to use. The Explore setting is designed to provide assistance for people carrying out daily activities or for identifying things in new places. A Shopping setting can capture products and help users identify their money. The Quick Read setting can help users go through their mail, read signs or identify other printed materials. Users can control parts of the app through a fingerprint sensor. For example, the sensor can be used to change operating settings or go through recent results captured by the camera. The app has three different detail levels that can be activated to provide more or less information about objects. Google says the goal of the app is to provide more independence to the nearly 253 million people in the world who are blind or have severe vision difficulties. There are other apps and devices designed to assist these people, too. Microsoft’s free Seeing AI app works similarly to Google Lookout. Microsoft calls its system – launched for iPhone users in 2017 - a “talking camera for the blind.” Seeing AI can recognize text, objects and people and speaks results to users. Microsoft says the system can provide audio sounds that relate to current light levels around the user. A recently released version also reportedly lets users put their fingers over a photo of something to get a sense of how the object feels. The app produces small vibrations and sounds to help this process. Another free app, called Be My Eyes, connects blind or low-sight individuals with sighted volunteers through live video calls. They should also communicate with them. 2 ) We can never lose sight of the significance of education. 第一句可以用not only t also 句型来改写成倒装句:Not only should parents spent time on their children, they are also advised to interact with them. On no account/by no means/ in no way/never can we lose sight of the significance of education. 1) Only in this way can this problem be effectively solved. 2) We can see that not only are there very large differences between these economies-s, but that these gaps are widening. 3) Strange as it may seem, parents’ attention sometimes hinders students’academic development. 4) Equally important to success in learning a foreign language is constant attention to details.

Some people think money which the government spends on art, such as music and painting, would be better spent on things more important. Do you agree or disagree?
